Farm-to-School.

Finding Local Food

Hey, this is Minnesota -- farmers are all over the place, right? It isn't hard to find farmers who sell food to the public.

For a school food service, though, it can seem daunting to find local food in the quantities that you need, sized and packaged in a way that works for you.

That's why we have information here for you about local Farmers,
Farmer Cooperatives, and Distributors.

Could you supply local food to schools? Want to be included on this website? Please contact the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture, misamail@umn.edu

Are you unsure of some of the terms associated with local food? Sustainable, cage-free, grass-fed, organic, and so on? Help is here!

Do You Need a Forager?

What is a Forager?

  • A forager is a person who is familiar with the farmers and farm organizations in the area; someone who can find the people to supply the food and make the initial contact with those people.

  • Annette Derouin, Willmar food service director, believes that the help of a forager (Lynn Mader) was critical to the success of Willmar's farm-to-school program.

  • If possible, find yourself a forager or two. Advertise for one among your students, because a student in your district may have a parent or other relative who could fill this need. Also contact any farmer organizations in your area and ask them to recommend someone who could be a forager.
