Finding Farmers Who Raise Beans

Central | Northeast | Northwest

Exceedingly few Minnesota farmers raise dry beans on a small scale. Most dry beans are grown in the western and northwestern parts of the state, by farmers who grow them on a large scale and sell them directly to bean dealers. The dealers clean, package, and ship the beans. The Northarvest Bean Growers Association, which represents bean growers in Minnesota and North Dakota, recommends that schools contact these dealers to purchase Minnesota-grown dry beans.

Because most dry beans are grown in just a small area of the state, you may not be able to find a truly "local" source -- but you can definitely find a Minnesota source!

Please also check our lists of distributors and farmer cooperatives that may be able to supply local dry beans.

Please note that these lists show farmers who raise beans and are likely to have the quantities needed; but they may not have experience with supplying a school. You will need to inform them of your school district's requirements for packaging, delivery, liability insurance, and so on.

Do you raise dry beans? Want to be on this list? Please contact the Minnesota Institute for Sustainable Agriculture: misamail@umn.edu.

See Buying Tips for estimated quantities required by school food services.
